Sultanpur: Background

This city is situated on the banks of the river Gomti, north of which is the administrative centre of Ram Nagari Ayodhya, in the east is the cultural capital Varanasi, south is the educational centre Sangam city Prayagraj, and in the west is the then capital Lucknow. Lord Ram's city, located in Ayodhya Mandal, has been an ancient religious and cultural city, which is famous for its annual grand Durga Puja (after Kolkata), the historic Kalpa tree, Dhopapp where Lord Ram washed away his sins after killing Ravana, Bijethua Dham of Lord Hanuman, Lohramau, the huge Siddha temple of Goddess Durga Maa, along with many other historical sites.

As per the 2011 Indian Census, Sultanpur had a total population of 107,640, of which 56,420 were males and 51,220 were females. Population within the age group of 0 to 6 years was 11,647. The total number of literates in Sultanpur was 84,080, which constituted 78.1% of the population with male literacy of 81.5% and female literacy of 74.4%.

Historical Durga Puja Festival

Though 'Durga Puja' is organised all over the country, the Durga Puja of Sultanpur district has its own name and identity. After Kolkata, if Durga Puja is celebrated anywhere, it is Sultanpur. The special thing is that while in the whole of India the idols of Maa Durga are immersed on Dashami, in Sultanpur the immersion takes place five days later i.e. on 'Purnima'.

Sultanpur district is situated between 25 degrees 59 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes north latitude and 81 degrees 32 minutes to 82 degrees 41 minutes east longitude in the middle part of the upper and middle Ganga plain.
